The Union Jack doesn't have overt Royal connotations. Unless you think all the UK is is the Royal Family, then the Union Jack should stay. Yeah, the union jack is ultimately a combination of 3 flags that don't have explicit royal connotations. In fact, there are flags that are much more obviously royalist in origin.
